Thanks to its wonderful subtropical climate, Tenerife offers reliable warmth throughout the year, making it one of the most popular overseas destinations for europeans. The island boasts some dazzling and extraordinary contrasts of landscape and culture, in the north fields and valleys filled with exotic blooms and lush banana plantations, the massive peak of Mount Teide, and inland the sleepy villages tucked away in the mountains, and charming old towns abundant in traditional canarian style and character. Sheltered by the mountains, the south of the island appears dry and arid by comparison, but with the bluest skies and highest temperatures, the accent here is on beach life and the cosmopolitan resorts of Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos have grown to satisfy all from the most avid sun-worshipper to the keenest shopper at a pace that is truly laid-back. Wherever you stay, the fabulous 'Carnival' towards the end of February each year is not to be missed. They say it's second only to 'Rio'!
